subjective culture…

I felt that this article was a good one to start off the semester with. I havent taken psychology before and this article really got me thinking as well as being more observant to the actions of those around me. If every article we read this semester triggers my brain as this one did, I am even more thrilled to what I am going to learn through this class.

“culture is to society what memory is to individuals”

Reading that one sentence in the second paragraph of the article sent my mind into a completely new level of thinking about culture…what it means, what it shows to “outsiders” about us. The more I think about what other people must think when they study my generation of American’s in the United States, it makes me somewhat uneasy.

Since culture is made up of all different things, and these are what is used to study that particular group of people. What are other cultures and genertions thinking about us? The article said that language was one of the most important aspects of culture; after reading that I noticed myself spending more time and concentration listening to the way people speak, and frankly, it is somewhat embarrassing. Our society/generation/culture has broken down the english language completely.

Through the elements of subculture it broke down each one in a very blunt, straight forward manner. It made it easier to understand as well as gave me more things to relate to it.

This article has made me even more excited for this class…
